The study was aimed to determine the biochemical changes in the free radical profile and antioxidant enzyme status in epileptic children before and after treatment with VPA monotherapy. Methods: We have studied the levels of serum LPO (MDA), erythrocyte antioxidants (GSH, GPx, SOD and CAT) in 25 epileptic children before and after treatment with sodium valproate and compared them against 25 healthy children. Results: The results showed that MDA levels were increased (p<0.001) in epileptic children under VPA treatment compared to the controls. Antioxidant enzymes GPx, SOD, CAT activities were decreased (p<0.001) in epileptic children receiving VPA monotherapy whereas no significant changes when compared between before and after treatment with VPA. The level of GSH was also decreased (p<0.001) in follow-up cases of epileptic children receiving VPA therapy. Conclusion: It was hypothesized that the oxidants-antioxidants balance were modified further by sodium valproate in epileptic children.Keywords

Free-space optics (FSO) is a wireless line of sight technology that transmits high data rates using a narrow beam light through the air as transmission medium. The demands on bandwidth and spectral availability are endless. Many telecommunications providers have been deploying different types of access technologies, such as cable and fixed wireless, in order to fulfill the needs. In many cases, transmission using fiber optics is preferred due to their ability to send high data rates with high reliability. This paper shows that the Free-space optics technology is an alternative to the already established fiber optics technology. The main reasons are it requires less installation time and it can save the required costs significantly without losing the capability to send high data rates. The paper also presents an assessment on the performance and current state of the Free Space Optics technology. It represents FSO’s limits in use under certain conditions; there are also circumstances where it can provide a high speed secure transmission channel.Keywords

Impulsive noise affects the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In OFDM systems, detecting of impulsive interference is challenging since both OFDM signals and impulsive noise follows Gaussian distributions. This paper proposes windowing technique nonlinearity scheme to detect and remove the over-sampled impulsive interference in OFDM systems. The analysis of the false detection probability (FDP) and successful detection probability (SDP) is given. The results indicate that the proposed scheme detects impulsive noise efficiently. In addition, the closed-form expressions for the FDP and SDP of blanking nonlinearity scheme which is widely used to remove impulsive interference are also derived. These two techniques are tested under audio signal instead of OFDM which leads the testing easy also applicable in UWB communication and also explained the new techniques to increase the level of SDP and compared with the previous techniques.

Background: Epilepsy is more common in children than in adults. Valproate (VPA) is a widely used drug in the treatment of epilepsy and, compared to other anticonvulsant drugs, is considered safe. However, more serious adverse reactions can occur such as hepatotoxicity and pancreatitis.
Aim: The present study was aimed to evaluate whether children with epilepsy undergoing valproate therapy has been associated with hepatotoxicity. So, a comparative study was done in epileptic children before and after treatment with VPA.
Methods: Serum levels of hepatic marker enzymes, protein and bilirubin profile and prothrombin time in plasma were estimated.
Results: Significant increase (p<0.05) of hepatic marker enzymes was observed in the epileptic children after VPA treatment. There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the levels of protein, albumin and globulin in post treated children. The levels of bilirubin showed no significant (p<0.05) changes but the prothrombin time was observed to be increased significantly (p<0.05).
Discussion: The increase in hepatic marker enzymes may reflect enzyme induction and the decrease in protein level showed increase binding of VPA to albumin. Increase in prothrombin time might be synthetic function of liver. The secretory function of liver not affected from the values of bilirubin.
Conclusion: The above results suggest that valproate treatment in epileptic children is associated with mild hepatotoxicity.

Background: Passive smoking is the inhalation of smoke, called second-hand smoke (SHS), or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), by persons other than the intended "active" smoker. It occurs when tobacco smoke permeates any environment, causing its inhalation by people within that environment. Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke causes disease, disability, and death. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding passive smoking among adolescents. Methods: A one group pre test and post test pre experimental design was adopted for the study 15 adolescent boys and girls fulfilling inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling in Allinayankan palayam area at Namakkal district. A pretest was conducted by using knowledge questionnaires related to Passive smoking. Immediately after pretest STP was given to the adolescent boys and girls for 6day post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of STP. Collected data was analyzed by using descriptive. Result: In The paired ‘t ’ test was calculated to analyze the effectiveness between pre and post test scores of adolescent boys and girls. The paired ‘t ’ test value was 5.66 when compared to table value 2.15 is high. It seems that there is significant relationship between structured teaching programme and adolescent boys and girls. Conclusion: The findings imply the need for education about Passive smoking among adolescents. Education should be extended management of Passive smoking and varies settings to be conducted.Keywords
